Field Name changes

This is in ArcSDE 10.2.1 which allows one to change field names under Properties. The field name change is not reflected when the layer in an mxd is re-"sourced" to this (new) layer. Forget completely different field names, it does not even recognize a simple ALLCAPS to CamelCase e.g. changing the field name from OUTFALL to Outfall.

The layer in the mxd does not recognize an "alias" change either (keep the field name the same). The layer has to be brought in again and all the symbology and labeling redone (pain).

Anyone else experiencing this?
