Adding a coordinate system?

Can anyone tell me how to easily define a coordinate system for an existing feature class? I have a layer that displays correctly in a map but has no coordinate system. When I add that layer to any other maps I get a warning about how the layer has no coordinate system and can only be drawn but not projected. I don't even know how this happens!
