export symbol as jpeg without bounding box

Hi All,

I'm trying to export basic highway symbols for someone else to use in Illustrator. I'm exporting them as jpegs, since the .ai export doesn't seem to work with older versions of Illustrator. Anyway...when I export the symbol as a jpeg, I can't get rid of the bounding box that represents the data frame from ArcGIS. I can make it smaller, but I can't get rid of it. It doesn't matter if the background color is white or none when I export, and the "clip output to graphics extent" option doesn't help.

Is this even possible, or do exports always have a fill from the data frame? Thanks -
