union tool

I am very new to arcGIS and am trying to figure out the union tool. I have successfully used it to combine two layers, each layer contained a number of records in the attribute table (like parcels owned and their owners). Can anyone help me to figure out why the new layer has more records (when I go to look at the attribute table) than the two that i combined with the union tool?
