Problems with ASTER HDF projections ArcGIS10

Hi! I couldn't find anything on this in the forum or online, so I decided to try describe the problem here.

I have downloaded ASTER level 1B images in hdf4 format (.dat files) that I have imported into ArcMap, without any error notifications.
The problem I have is that they end up completely wrong, so that when I import shapefiles covering the same area they are in different parts of the world. The things I have noticed are:

-When zoomed into ASTER images, the coordinates in the lower right corner do not change when i move the cursor over the area, they are fixed at 40.512 0 Decimal Degrees. When I zoom in to the shapefile, the coordinates change and seem correct.

- When checking the properties of the ASTER images, the Extent seems correct (i.e. similar coordinates as the shapefile) and the Spatial reference is set to UTM_Zone_38_Northern_Hemisphere. Datum is: D_Not_specified_based_on_GRS_1980_spheroid.

- I have managed to add an ASTER 1A image with success, and that layer has GCS_WGS_1984 as spatial reference, but I don't think I did anything different with that one, however it was not downloaded at the same time.

I can't figure out what's wrong and have no idea how to solve the problem. I have tried importing the files in several different projects, with and without on-the-fly projection, but nothing changes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lina
