Creating a 3D surface from contours

I was wodnering if anyone could help me with what I am sure is a really simple task. I have seen it done, and therefore know it's possible, but I am not an expert at GIS.

I have LiDAR data in the form of contours saved as a .shp file. I have been given to believe that point data would be better when working with LiDAR but polylines is all I have.

What I want to do is create a 3D surface that I can then cut cross-sections from, turn into a slope angle or hillshade map, or produce a DEM from. I thought one simply turne dthe data into a TIM model and that was that but I have tried this and the result is extremly patchy (presumably due to the fact it is working with contours not points??). I have also been told I should convert the shapefile to raster and then select float on surface, but the result was just strange.

Could anyone tell me how to do what I want to do? I am the only one here that knows anything about GIS but that really is a desperate situation. I am being relied upon but I'm out of my depth a little.

Thanks for any help in advance!
