Linking Access Data to Shape file using join

I am trying to link an access database table to a shape file in Arc 9.3.1 using the join facility.
I've created a database file in ArcCatalog and imported the file into the mxd but when I try and join the two using the first column of the database layer is not displaying.

Can anyone help me please?
