Working with large datasets

I've been working in ArcGIS for a while but have limited experience with geodatabases. I have a very large file (>200,000 records) that I would like to display in ArcMap. I tried to add XY data and convert to a shapefile, but it must be too large becuase I lose many of the rows- it only displays a subset of the total records. So I'm assuming I need to convert the data to a geodatabase instead- however, for the life of me I cannot seem to do this. I created a geodatabase and have tried to import the data (table to table or table to geodatabase) but it always fails, with unhelpful errors such as "failed to convert" and "failed to execute." Can someone point me to a tutorial for viewing and dealing with large datasets? For instance, I also don't know how you specify your XY data in a geodatabase either. I'm at my wits end and cannot seem to find the appropriate info in ArcGIS help. I'm working in 10.1. Thank you!
