Can anyone explain why file locks (schema locks for example: XXXXXX.shp.PCHP9040CNZ.2084.5664.sr.lock) persist after a shapefile or .dbf is removed from ArcMap? This has been a problem for years and it seemed that ESRI was going to address it with 10.x, but nothing ever happened. I understand the purpose of locks, however, when the file is no longer being used by ArcMap the lock should disappear, but it does not. This causes all kinds of problems such as not being able to delete files with the operating system (OS). Closing ArcMap to remove locks and then restarting ArcMap to begin working again is a terrible waste of time. I don't understand. Is it not possible for ESRI programmers to remove locks when a file is removed from ArcMap? Obvisously the file isn't being used, what is the purpose in having the lock persist?
